Q: Who can apply for the Astro Scholarship? A: Astro Scholarship is a bursary reserved for Astro subscribers and their immediate family members, i.e. spouse and children only. To reward our loyal customers, an applicant must be an Astro subscriber or is the spouse or child of the subscriber who has maintained good payment record for 12 months or more. Siblings or parents of a subscriber are not eligible. All applicants must hold a Malaysian citizenship. Only students enrolling in a university recognised by JPA (Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam Malaysia) may apply. An applicant is expected to ensure the university and areas of study are recognised before applying for the Astro Scholarship.
Q: If a subscriber has more than one child, can all the children apply at the same time? A: The subscriber may apply at the same time but all applicants from the same family must volunteer or self declare this fact if short-listed. It is unlikely that more than 1 member of a family will be awarded the Scholarship. Astro prefers to distribute the allocation of scholarship so more families will benefit from it.
Q: I am currently doing a diploma/professional course in one college but have been accepted by a university recently. May I apply? A: Yes,you may.
Q: I am already studying in a university. Can I still apply for the Astro Scholarship? A: The Astro Scholarship is for students first-time enrolling in a university. Students already pursuing a degree in mid course may not apply. We discourage anyone pursuing a degree in a local university to apply for a scholarship to study overseas. However, if you wish to apply to study Masters in Malaysia, you may apply any time if you have been granted a place at the university even if you have not completed your undergraduate degree.
Q: I am not an Astro subscriber now. Can I apply for the Astro Scholarship? A: Astro Scholarship is a bursary reserved for Astro subscribers and their legal spouses and children only. It is a benefit reserved only for Astro subscriber community. Where applicable, you may apply for the scholarship when this condition is fulfilled in the near future.
Q: What do I need to apply for the Astro Scholarship? How do I apply for the Scholarship? A: All applications must be submitted online. To begin applying, you must complete the questions and information requested on the website. Preferences will be given to applicants who have already been accepted by the universities. Those granted conditional acceptance by the universities are strongly encouraged to apply to the Astro Scholarship. However, if you have just recently received your SPM/STPM/'O'/’A’ level, or Matriculation examinations results and have not had a chance to apply to any university, you may still apply to Astro Scholarship if your grades are in the top 10 percentile. All Astro Scholarship will be awarded subject to final acceptance into the specific programme in the specific university you have applied for. That is, Astro may grant you only a conditional offer of scholarship if you do not currently have a final letter of offer by the university. Should you fail to be accepted into the specific programme in the university, your scholarship offer will also be withdrawn. The university acceptance letter together with other physical documents and photocopies of any supporting evidence need not be submitted with the application. You will be required to show proof of these documents only if short-listed.
Q: How do I know that Astro has received my application? A: After you click on the submit button online, you will receive an on-screen message to confirm the submission.
Q: When can I start applying and when will I know if I have been successful? A: There are 2 windows of application as follows:
March to April (for foreign and local universities and institutions) – Undergraduate & Graduate programmes
November (for foreign universities and institutions as well as Limkokwing University of Creative Technology) - Undergraduate programmes
Applicants will normally be required to attend 2 rounds of interviews and the final selection will be made by the Astro within one month from the closing date of the respective windows. Please note that the online application process will only be open during these two windows of application.
Q: What other documents must I submit with my application? Do I need to submit my transcripts, certifications, and application form by mail? A: You do not submit any physical document until you are short-listed. You simply complete the online application form listing the required examination results.
Q: I have just submitted my application online, but I forgot to correct a mistake in there. Can I resend it again? A: No, you will not be able to change it and you cannot send in a second application. Please ensure all details are accurate. Any incorrect information may be deem as a deliberate attempt to mislead and thus brings your integrity into question.
Q: I forgot my password, what should I do? A: If you forget your password, just click on the Forgot Your Password link found on the E-Pass registration page. You will be asked to enter your e-mail address which you registered with, your login ID or your NRIC and we will email you your password. If you are still unable to retrieve your password, just contact us at webmaster@astro.com.my and we will provide you with your password.
Q: Which examination results should I use in my application? What is the most important criterion for Astro to start assessing your application? A: For all Graduate scholarship, official acceptance into the programme is required. For foreign undergraduate scholarship, acceptance or conditional acceptance into the programme is the most preferred and relevant document you may submit together with your SPM/STPM/'O'/’A’ level and Matriculation examinations results. You must list your detailed grades for the relevant examinations. For instance, if you intend to enroll in an Australian school, you must provide details of your grades in either ‘A’ levels, Australian Matriculations, or the examination results that your university uses to evaluate your enrollment. You may submit other examination records such as SAT and TOEFL in the free text column provided. If you have not gained admission into a foreign university, you may submit the above examination results without proof of admission at this point in time. For local undergraduate degree courses, SPM or STPM results are required for Astro to process your application. If you have been accepted by a local university using your SPM results and you have not sat for STPM, then you must submit your SPM results. Trial examination results or forecast results are not acceptable.
Q: What are the criteria Astro uses to decide who gets the Scholarship? A: There are 3 stages: In Stage 1, candidates will be short-listed for each scholarship based on examination results, relevancy in the areas of study, the universities applied to, and the quality of the 4 essays submitted. The examination results you may submit are STPM, ‘A’ levels, the Australian Matriculations, 'O' level or SPM. In Stage 2, these short-listed candidates will be interviewed by the 1st panel of interviewers comprising Astro Heads of Divisions. From these short-listed candidates, they will recommend the most suitable candidates to the final panel of interviewers who will select the final winner. The final panel of interviewers will comprise a Senior Officer of Astro and an independent person likely to be a distinguished authority in the field of education.
