He makes Prudential Astro Masters final, bags 42-inch LCD

LUMUT – It was a double victory for Zadrul Insan when he not only qualified for October’s Prudential Astro Masters grand final in Hainan, he also took home the coveted 42-inch LG LCD television for being closest the pin during the 12th round at Damai Laut GCC near here last Saturday.

Playing in a field of 111 Astro susbscribers, Zadrul went round the stunning Damai Laut course carding a four-over gross 76, comfortably edging Teh Bee Wah by two strokes while Azahar Kamaruddin was a stroke further adrift.

The gross title earned Zadrul an LG DVD Player and a ticket to the grand final where he and 47 other qualifiers will compete on the Meishi Mayflower Golf Club and the West Coast Golf Club.

“I’m familiar with the Damai Laut layout,” said Zardul, adding that he found the greens putting better than before, “but I never thought I would be that successful today.”

The short par three 13th is one of the few holes in the country with a green that is surrounded by bunkers and Zardul confidently pitched his ball to five feet four inches, winning himself the LCD.

Alex Yau Wai Heng turned the handicapping system upside down when he returned with a nine-under 63 to take the nett title. The 24-handicapper earned himself an LG DVD Player and will join Zardul to the grand final in Hainan.

In the ‘A’ Medal for handicappers 0-12, Azahar Kamarudin was an easy winner with 40 stableford points, earning himself an LG home theatre system. The 11-handicapper was three points ahead of Teh Bee Wah who was easily consoled with the portable DVD Player as his prize. Third was Mohamad Fadzil.

Wan Soon Kheng won the ‘B’ Medal with a four-point margin, shooting 43 points. A.B. Malek and Steven Ooi were second and third respectively. Yue Ing Sing emerged ‘C’ Medal winner when he came home with 42 points. Lee Sean Kong was second two points behind with Wan Zahiran a point further adrift.

Meanwhile at Tasik Puteri GCC in Rawang last Tuesday, Lam Kong Foo and Ismail Yahya earned tickets to the grand final in Hainan when they won the gross and nett title respectively.

Lam shot a five-over 77 while Ismail, a 16-handicapper came home with an eight-under 64. The mid- to high-handicappers turned the Tasik Puteri course into a shooting range and it showed in the ‘C’ Medal when 22-handicapper Marvin Tan Chee Song scored 44 points to win a 21-inch LG Flat Screen television.

Runner-up was 18-handicapper Wan Azhari Wan Hassan who scored 42 points while Chua Aik Long was two more points further adrift. Siew Kay Hoong won the ‘B’ Medal shooting 43 points. The 14-handicapper was three points ahead of Mohd Fauzi Ahmad and two more ahead of Azlan Adam.

Dr Haminuddin Abdul Hamid almost scored a hole-in-one at the island-green 14th when his tee-shot stopped one foot short of the cup. Still, his fine effort was good enough to earn himself a 42-inch LG LCD television as he was closest in the field.
