JIM'S 70 EARNS HIM HAINAN TRIP
The opening round of the Prudential Astro Masters 2009 got off to a cracking start at Kota Permai Golf & Country Club when Jimmy Chia Kee Joo carded a 70 gross and earned himself a berth in the Grand Final at Hainan Island in October.
Chia, a one-handicapper and member of Kota Permai, capitalised on home ground knowledge and took advantage of greens softened by a three-hour early morning shower. He posted scores of 35 and 35 in both nines to sweep aside 131 other participants.
But the golfer who made the most noise was Kenny Khoo Keng Fatt. The 13-handicapper played magnificently to shoot an 11-under 61 nett to book the other place in the Grand Final in Hainan.
The Prudential Astro Masters Grand Final will be played at Meishi Mayflower Golf Club and West Coast Golf Club in Hainan Island from October 7-10. The gross and overall nett winners of each of the 21 rounds will get to go to China’s leading island resort.
Meanwhile, Jeffrey Low Yong Lim, who came close on two occasions the last two years, finally got his wish come true when he won the 42-inch LG LCD television in the Sure-to-Win Hole-in-One competition at the short 14th hole.
His eight-iron attempt from just under 150 metres actually found the ball hitting the cup. “The ball went in but jumped out and ended up six inches from the cup,” he said. “I’m glad my persistence paid off.”
The first three winners based on stableford points in the A, B and C Medal categories earned prizes while 18 other Astro subscribers went home with their hands full in the Lucky Draw that included vacuum cledaners, DVD players and several watches.
